1. Tactile Tapware

For bathroom fittings, brass/gold and bronze tapware are still key for bathroom design in 2020, however tapware will take the next step in bathroom decoration with different shapes and hues new to the market for eg aged brass and bronze that patina over time. Wall mounted tapware is making a big comeback with simple silhouettes and clean lines. Opting for wall mounted tapware for your bathroom renovation provides the additional benefit of greater counter space allowing more room for storing bathroom accessories within easy reach.

2. Modern Minimalism

Calming and retreat style luxury is a key trend for bathroom renovations in 2020 and one likely to stay.

Taking an even more minimalist approach in bathroom design will be popular in 2020. This less-is-more approach calls for pared-back palettes and statement finishes.

Impactful design themes with simple decor for walls, tiles, bathtubs, sinks, and vanities, creating a negative space or a blank canvas. To inject personality and interest, the bathroom design team at Balnei & Colina suggest using bold and unusually coloured fixtures like faucets, shower heads, and handle-ware, for contrast allowing these to take centre stage.

Design Tip: For a more modern look pair an earth-tone backdrop with dark, matte black fixtures.

3. Console-Style Vanities

Vanities are an essential part of every bathroom renovation, providing much needed storage and as well as bathroom workspace. With the average floor space in today’s modern homes decreasing, custom console vanities provide a smart space saving solution for smaller bathroom renovations.

The team at Balnei & Colina always encourage clients to consider their storage requirements carefully before renovating their bathrooms and designing a bathroom vanity. If your really short on bathroom floor space, you may choose to create additional dedicated bathroom storage in an alternate room for eg your bedroom and only store daily essentials in the bathroom.

Design Tip: Custom vanities with beautiful shaker detailing in bold colours like navy and green can create a great focal point for your bathroom renovation.

3. Sleek Lighting

Lighting always important in a home but even more so in a bathroom renovation; you want to ensure your bathroom has enough task lighting, particularly surrounding your bathroom vanity for activities like make up application, but you need to complement this with some mood lighting as well.

Over the last few years, bold and grand bathroom lighting was the in-thing. It was common to find an intricate pendant hanging above a modern bathtub.

But in 2020, as people move back to more discreet lighting systems, this bathroom trend will change. Minimalist and linear light fixtures will become more popular ensuring a bright bathroom renovation and allowing other bathroom design elements shine through. The Balnei & Colina bathroom design team recommends exploring different light fittings that suit each bathroom zone (wet and dry). LED strips, mirrors with integrated lights, recessed fixtures, and streamlined drop-down fixtures are just some of the options available.

4. The Standalone Tub

Standalone tubs have been first choice in bathroom renovations for a while, and have a timeless appeal. Although standalone bathtubs can be more costly to install, they are a worthwhile investment. Freestanding tubs are often the preferred choice for today’s home buyers, adding a sense of grandeur and luxury to a bathroom renovation and increasing a property's overall value.

There are a wide range of styles available to suit your home design scheme from vintage to modern, the standalone bathtub is still a stand out for bathroom renovations in 2020.

5. Tiles with Pattern

There is a worldwide trend for colourful and pattered tiles, injecting new bathroom renovations with an air of movement and excitement.  In the last few years we’ve seen patterned tiles gain momentum in bathroom design and renovation in Australia, and the trend will take centre stage for 2020.

Renovating content readily available through social media, TV, YouTube and other mediums means consumers are more reno savvy than ever, and becoming more confident in their design choices when it comes to renovating their homes. Today’s Aussie home renovators want to create spaces that are lively and interesting, and are moving away from standard white and beige bathroom renovations in favour of more bold, colourful, patterned tiles and finishes that can be combined with almost any interior style - boho, art deco, modern, traditional, Hampton's, Industrial and the list goes on.

Design Tip: The key to patterned tiles is not to overwhelm your bathroom space with pattern and colour but rather to use them sporadically. Place patterned tiles in one location to create an area of focus in your bathroom renovation for eg a feature wall behind your freestanding bath, vanity or the floor space.
