Did you know that the average Australian woman wears only 33% of her wardrobe over one year?

With a custom wardrobe by Balnei & Colina, your pieces can be beautifully displayed in an organised and highly visible manner, making it easier to shop your entire wardrobe, not just one-third of it!

Even if you don't have the room for a separate walk-in robe, a built-in closet with custom joinery designed to accommodate hanging racks, shelves, and drawers can add a little bit of luxury (and a whole lot of organisation!) to your day. Tailored storage configurations and a layout that maximises the available space will save you time and money in the long run.

Once all your pieces have a place and are displayed with care, getting ready will become something to look forward to.

In this month's B&C Home Journal, we show you how to best design and organise your wardrobe like a professional. Enjoy our 4 rules to live by for wardrobe bliss!

How To Organise Your Custom Wardrobe

1. Make it accessible

Think about the categories or items you wear the most, and position them in an easy-to-access spot at eye level. Lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes should be stored toward the back of the closet and on upper shelves of your custom wardrobe.

Angled shoe shelves will make shoes easy to see and grab from your custom wardrobe, while pigeon holes for accessories like scarves, belts, and bags keep things organised and visible.

Pro Organisational Tip: Free up hanger space by folding down sweaters and denim. These items fold easily and neatly, and in the case of knit sweaters, they retain their shape better when stored on a shelf.

2. Group like with like

Group by category (e.g. jackets, dresses, shirts) and colour block within these groupings. This approach looks visually appealing and speeds up your outfit selection time.

For a Marie-Kondo level of wardrobe organisation, hang everything facing the same direction, with longer items on the left and shorter items on the right, so the base of your clothes creates a neat, upward-sloping line in your custom wardrobe.

Pro Organisational Tip: Cheap wire hangers will bend and warp over time, leading to droopy, wrinkled clothing. Rows of uniform timber hangers look great, but in reality, they can eat up a lot of rack space due to their thickness. Slim velvet-covered or felt non-slip hangers are a great space-saving option and are also gentle on garments.

3. Declutter regularly

Knowing precisely what's in your custom wardrobe takes the hassle out of getting ready each day, and it can help cut down on the number of duplicates you accidentally buy. Not only that, an overstuffed closet can affect air circulation and damage your clothes, so it's wise to conduct regular cleanouts. Donate unwanted items in good condition to your local charity store, or make some money by selling them online or at a market or garage sale.

Extend the life of cherished clothing by taking them to a tailor when they need mending or getting handy with a needle and thread.

Pro Organisational Tip: Don’t leave clothes hanging in dry cleaning bags. Fabrics need air circulation to reduce humidity and odours, so keeping pieces trapped in bags will lead to a build-up of damaging moisture and mould.

4. Lighting is key

The correct lighting and a full-length mirror are must-haves for a fully functioning custom wardrobe and dressing area. If you lack natural light, well-positioned artificial light sources, or a skylight, can give you the illumination you need to see and locate your garments easily. If you have space in your custom walk-in robe, a statement pendant will really up the luxe factor and help turn every wardrobe visit into a fabulous experience.
