Laundry Room Design Ideas

We know the kitchen is the heart of the home, but the laundry room is often an afterthought when renovating a home. This small space is one of the most used rooms in a house, and the team at Balnei & Colina renovations often refer to it as the ‘engine room’ of the home.

The laundry is used almost everyday, so rather than placing it at the bottom of the renovation to-do list, why not give it some design attention, and create a space that will support your daily laundry activities in an efficient way. After all, if you washing, drying and ironing, why not to it in a stylish space?

A laundry room is work zone, and the team at Balnei & Colina renovations always prioritise functionality and aesthetic equally, to make the most of your laundry space, no matter the size.

In this month’s B&C Home Journal, we share our favourite laundry room design ideas to help inspire your next laundry renovation. Enjoy!

Laundry Room Design Ideas

1. In keeping with your home

CUSTOM LAUNDRY JOINERY

The design team Balnei & Colina renovations, know custom joinery is the best way to create the most functional space, that flows and complements the rest of your home. Repeat the same design elements in your laundry renovation that you’ve used in your kitchen renovation for eg, cabinetry/countertop material, and finishes. This will ensure a cohesive home look.

2. Add laundry hanging space

Make your laundry functional, and fill unused wall space with decorative hanging rods for ironing and air-drying.

3. Hang Your Dryer

Balnei & Colina renovations regularly use a stacked washer/dryer configuration when designing a custom laundry renovation, in particular for more compact spaces. This option lets you utilise vertical space, and frees up more room for additional storage and/or countertop space, as well as floor space.

The washer is typically located on the laundry floor, with the dryer hung a couple of feet above. Ensure your washer/dryer is secured properly by engaging experienced tradespeople, like the renovation team at Balnei & Colina to ensure stability as well as safety.  Correctly installed laundry appliances are also more likely to better withstand long term use.

The vertical layout is well suited to smaller apartments or homes, without a dedicated laundry space.

4. Create more laundry counter space

You can never have enough counter space, so make sure this is a priority when consulting with your laundry designer. A laundry counter space can be multipurpose, and work as a make shift ironing board surface, folding area, and storage area. Having added counter space is ideal for a dynamic family.

5. Convert a Closet

Don’t have a dedicated laundry room? Re-purpose an unused closest and create a new laundry space within it. Dedicating a separate laundry space within a closet, also means that you can close the space off when it’s not in use. A large closet can accommodate a washer and dryer, counter space, storage space for washing essentials and even a sink, if plumbing permits.

You can create a laundry closet virtually anywhere in your home for eg next to the kitchen, near a bathroom, in a garage, or if your open to it, even in your bedroom. Once the closet doors are closed, the space can seamlessly blend with the rest of your room's walls, so no one will notice the presence of the laundry room.

Design Tip: To make your laundry renovation feel more like a happy place, rather than utilitarian space, add bold patterns with wallpaper/tiles or decor, like greenery or family pics, that make you happy and relaxed every time you open the doors.

6. Off the Wall Laundry

Have spare wall space? That’s all you need to create a dedicated laundry area. Place both appliances together, create shelves on either side for storage, add a countertop directly above the machines, install a few cupboards over the entire set-up. This type of laundry layout is simple, effective, and affordable.

You can also keep your laundry renovation concealed by adding sliding or pocket doors, to keep your laundry room hidden when not in use.

7. Smarter Storage

Storage is so important, and a key ingredient to making your laundry practical for use everyday. At Balnei & Colina, we design our laundry spaces to maximise storage, using as much vertical space as possible. We design roomy laundry cupboards, drawers, and shelves and optimally locate them for easy access, which means items like irons, ironing boards, vacuum cleaners, hampers and baskets can be easily kept out of sight.

By using unique shelving and storage solutions, every inch of space is utilised in a Balnei & Colina laundry renovation and every area has a purpose.

Our Top Tips for Renovating a Laundry

Ventilation

  • Ensure you have adequate ventilation for your washing machine and dryer to reduce steam build up within the room.
  • Acoustics are important in a laundry room that contains multiple machines working at anytime of the day. Muffling noise, using noise cancelling materials, as well as locating your laundry in a space that is away from sleeping and living areas is ideal.

Appropriate Materials

  • Your laundry is a wet zone, and when renovating a laundry it needs to be treated as such. Use surfaces and materials that are moisture and mould resistant.

An experienced laundry renovation contractor, like the team at Balnei & Colina renovations will cover off everything you need to create your ideal laundry space including:
