Balnei & Colina Coastal Bathroom Recipe

Coastal style is all about creating a home that’s comfortable and inviting. Follow this simple design recipe to create a classic coastal bathroom renovation.

1) Bath & Shower

A bathtub is often the first thing that draws your attention when walking into a bathroom. A freestanding, white stone bath will add a sense of timeless elegance. A spacious bath provides you a place to soak and relax and the more comfortable the tub the more you’ll enjoy the time you spend in it.

For the shower, clear Shower Glass doors will allow maximum light to flow throughout the room as well as show off your feature shower tiles.

2) Tiles

Opt for patterned, shapely and textured tiles, laid in a basketweave, brick, herringbone or classic subway pattern. Laying tiles in different patterns, such as herringbone or basketweave, creates greater visual interest and texture. The bathroom design team at Balnei & Colina suggest picking a wall for a feature tile. A tile feature wall can include shower walls, the backsplash, or along one main bathroom wall.

Choose tile colours in soft whites, muted blues, greys or greens; all will evoke a beach feel. Opting for more neutral shades for floor tiles in a larger format, will lend an air of sand and surf as well as create the illusion of a greater floor space, making your coastal bathroom renovation feel even more spacious.

As far as materials, natural materials are more cohesive with a coastal look. Examples include, marble, faux timber, and the introduction of woven elements can be beautiful.

3) Vanity & Storage

The vanity is often the focal point of a bathroom, and for a coastal feel opt for neutral shaker style cabinetry (white, navy, teal, grey all can work well) or soft wood tones with a visible grain.

Accentuate your shaker-style joinery with chrome or nickel pulls. Using brass or gold tones for your hardware can be equally beautiful and add a unique design element.

Custom bathroom joinery, like floating shelves, custom bathroom pantry, or even a bench where you can store towels and double as seating when necessary can work to enhance the overall look and functionality of your bathroom renovation. Woven baskets are also a great way to create storage in keeping with the coastal aesthetic.

4) Lighting

Sconce lighting above a vanity makes for a beautiful, coastal feel, provides important task lighting for everyday bathroom grooming activities like the application of makeup, and is both elegant and timeless.

It is easy enough to swap out light fixtures in your bathroom so if you’re feeling brave, you can choose to make your lighting a decor feature or even install a wooden ceiling fan achieve a coastal plantation look.

5) Decor

Finally, when you’re designing a coastal bathroom, don’t forget decor and styling. Rugs will warm up a bathroom as well as add textural layers. Soft, decadent bath towels and linens create warmth, and plants help to freshen up the space.
