Simple ideas for Styling your Kitchen

The best way to think about kitchen styling is to group decor in terms of size. Larger ticket items, like pendants, rug & stools, and smaller decor accessories used to make vignettes in key kitchen zones.

For this article, Part 1 of our Kitchen Styling Series, we’ll be examining larger ticket decor items. Stay tuned for Part 2, out in January, where we take a closer look a smaller kitchen decor pieces and how to style them.

Kitchen Styling Part 1 - Large Ticket Items

1) Kitchen Pendants

Feature pendant lighting is the first thing you should consider when styling your renovated kitchen. A lighting scheme always forms part of the Balnei & Colina kitchen design process.

When selecting pendants for your new kitchen, think about choosing a style of pendant that works in with the kitchen cabinetry style, colour as well as finishes and materials you’ve selected for your door hardware. The type and style of lighting will help set the foundation for creating your kitchen decor theme.

It’s also important to think about your kitchen pendants in relation to your overall home lighting scheme. Consider how your statement kitchen pendants will work with your existing home lighting plan, particularly if you have an open plan layout, and choose pendants that will match the style of your home.

General Rules to follow for Kitchen Pendant lighting

  • Ensure pendants are a minimum of 760-800mm from the top of the counter to the bottom of the pendant.
  • 2 or 3 pendant lights maximum - Generally if the island benchtop is 3m or less = 2 pendants. Where island bench is 3m or greater =  3 pendants
  • Pendants should always be installed at least 150mm from the edge of a bench and at least 760mm apart.

2) Kitchen Stools

The next large ticket item that you’ll need to source is kitchen counter stools. Things to consider when selecting kitchen counter stools include:

  • Height in relation to your countertop - ensure there is enough room to tuck your stools away when not in use, as well as ensure they are the comfortable height in relation to your benchtop when in use. Standard heights for stools are 600-700mm and should fit under standard kitchen countertop heights.

  • Comfort and maintenance: Chances are you’ll be using these stools on a daily basis, so make sure they will be comfortable to sit in for longer periods of time and that kitchen spills can be easily wiped up. If you looking for flexibility, a swivel or backless stool is perfect however, if your prioritising comfort, choose stools that offer back support and/or arm rests, and are upholstered.

Design Tip: Remember to buy stools that suit your kitchen colours & finishes as well as your personal taste.

3) Kitchen Rug

Rugs are a great decor statement piece and serve to properly zone large spaces. Usually, we like to place a runner in front of a long line of cabinetry typically in front of the sink. Apart from protecting flooring whilst washing up, they are soft and comfortable to stand on.

Choose a rug that’s not too expensive (easily replaced), made from stain resistant material, and preferably patterned so that stains are not obvious.

A rug can add an injection of colour and provide great contrast to neutral flooring, bringing warmth and interest to any kitchen renovation project.
